A Joyful Indian Stick Dance

Dandiya

Dandiya is a traditional Indian stick dance that has become very popular among Indian and Indian expatriate communities, especially at American universities. Often called the stick dance because many styles do involve short sticks, or Dandiya (often with bells attached to the ends). It is often danced by men and women moving in circles, with partners striking each other's sticks while dancing. Elaborate bright colored tiered skirts (women) and shirts (men) are often worn for this dance.

• The movie Bride and Prejudice includes a Dandiya Raas dance scene. The circular movement is in imitation of the famous dance of Krishna dancing with the gopis when he made it appear that he was dancing with each one.
